Are you just starting out working with GIS applications?
Or do you simply need to understand GIS capabilities to do your job effectively?
This course will provide an overview of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) terminology, data requirements, analysis techniques, and GIS output. It is designed for those starting out working with GIS applications or those who simply need to better understand GIS capabilities to do their job more effectively.
In addition to the detailed technical information, the course will stress how to use GIS analysis to solve real-world planning problems such as:
- What is the fastest route from the fire station to a reported building fire?
- How up-to-date are the water/sewer facilities within a one-mile radius of a proposed development site?
- How many acres of land zoned "residential" will be affected by a proposed road widening?
- Which potential sources of contamination threaten a community's drinking water supply?
The Planning Academy (through the School of Public and International Affairs) is a certified AICP provider and this course has been pre-approved for 12 CM credits. All registrants will also receive 1.4 Virginia Tech Continuing Education credits.
The Planning Academy at Virginia Tech provides ongoing training for mid-career planning, design and development professionals in a range of implementation-related practice areas.
We offer a broad range of courses to give you the skills you need to succeed in shaping the built environment in the 21st century.
Registration available soon! Check back on the course website later this week.
