This session is designed to give designers, planners and individuals an overview of the IES/IDA Model Lighting Ordinance (MLO) that was released for public comment on 6/24/2010. The MLO is a template for municipalities to use to develop outdoor lighting standards. It is the most comprehensive document that has been developed that addresses in detail the majority of issues confronting planning and zoning officials. The second release of the MLO is substantially improved and now includes a users guide that makes it easier for the layman to understand. The MLO incorporates the IES luminaire classification system referred to as BUG (Backlight/Uplight/Glare) and a lumens-peracre system for regulating the quantity of illumination for properties.
In addition to the MLO overview, IDA will also present a training session on uplight and glare followed by a discussion of the impact of broad-spectrum white light on skyglow and the environment.
